THE TOWN OF KUTNÁ HORA (UNESCO SITE)

The history of Kutná Hora is closely connected with the mining of silver ore. The deposits were systematically used from the 13th century and soon after, the mine at Kutná Hora was already providing about one third of total European silver production. The city became the centre of the manufacture of the „Prague groshen“, which was one of the most stable currencies in Europe. At the end of the 14th century, the local Osel mine attained a depth of six hundred meters and was the deepest mine in the world at that time. Thanks to silver mines, Kutná Hora gained excessive wealth and became the second most important city in the Kingdom of Bohemia, after Prague. These days, Kutná Hora represents a unique ensemble of more than three hundred medieval and Baroque buildings and is on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List.
